guitar modification?
any ideas on how to turn an electric guitar into a noise machine?
all i can think of right now is using steel wire instead of strings and maybe hammer in a few nails here and there... an amplified steel plate on the back of it....
is there a way to tweak the pickups?
*thinking hard*
of course i'd play it with a drill...

Re: guitar modification?
My first noise project involved a cheap electric guitar restrung with bailing wire and an electric toothbrush plugged into a stereo receiver with some faulty and very dirty pots on it.
'prepared guitar' is a good way to go. you're probably familiar with kevin drumm, but if you're not you should check out his solo stuff - it's defintiely on the improv tip but much of it is extremely harsh (album picks: 1st, 2nd, land of lurches, sheer hellish miasmah is my favorite listen here http://www.bleep.com/current_item.php?s ... MEGO053_DM ).
do you mean 'how do i use a guitar for noise' or 'how can circuit-bend my guitar'. i don't know muhc about the 2nd question, but definitely, attach metal to the strings (paper clips, sheets, magnets) and get an ebow, hand-held fans, and of course acoustic feedback....

I agree with those two Kevin Drumm recommendations. To that I'd add a recommendation for Brian Ruryk. I don't know exactly how he prepares his guitars, but they come out sounding like they're in a trash compacter, really nice sounds.
I know, this isn't helping you at all..
You could try putting a variety of different microphones on your guitar. Contact mic on the bridge, and/or the nut, computer microphones under the strings, dollar store mic's duct taped right on top of the strings, go nuts.

you can always 'add' cicuitry to it. On my bass, I have added an N567 oscillator with LPB2 in the curcuit cavity, and an optical theremin to the neck. So I get two extra tone thingys when its played. Plus I added two more pickups that are NOT under the strings, they are just there to feedback with the speakers. Slinkies are added to the headstock and contact mic'd, so I get junk noise when I swing it around too. It has four output jacks, so cables are an issue with movement. This is modified fairly recently, so I have not played live with it yet. It's broken once already.
that is sweet
todd,
that sounds fucking sweet. i play bass too. i've been thinking about prepared bass alot. i wasn't sure if others out there play prepared bass.
i love to hear some recordings of that.

The theremin is still kind of broken, but you get the idea.
