In retrospect, there is something surprisingly traditional about many of Greenberg's critics since they have not only sought to destroy the systematic specification of the arts, but have done so through the reassertion of a literary paradigm through which this dissolution is to be understood. This is very explicit in the early phases of Conceptual Art, which largely understood itself as producing a direct and radical criticism of Greenberg. Both Joseph Kosuth and the Art & Language group (as their name suggested) sought to displace the specification of each art's medium through [in] the development of a generic art practice pursued through the examination of the language of art in general (Kosuth 1999; Art & Language 1999).
Moving on - i'll read the book, but point out that this above in the introduction is simply wrong*. The likes of Kosuth and A&L rejected both painting and sculpture as being not necessary to Art, (much in the same way that painting rejected representation as not necessary- and more recently the Conceptual poets rejected 'creativity') and so stopped painting, stopped making objects. It was not "a literary paradigm " but "Art language", initially this conceptualism was a tautological language with no reference to anything other than itself. This movement famously "imploded", and conceptual art degenerated into expressing some idea, which could and was and is about anything, whereas the A&L crew would have denied this arguing the subject of art should be art, and nothing else. A&L was no more 'literature' than a maths text or paper on QM.

*which doesnt bode well...
i'll think you'll find the book badly written... see what i added in bold.
Badly written or not, Joseph Kosuth and the Art & Language group did not examine the language of art in general. I read their work, have copies... They sort the essence of what Art was, in doing so ditched objects, and aesthetics.

so the study of music de-privileged literature? i don't get what your problem is with this
No! Painting in Greenberg's terms didn't study music! FFS it focused on its own non representational stuff, paint, canvas, flatness, nothing to do with music!

It stopped illustrating stories, representing nature and became itself for itself.

My problem is you don't read and forget what little you do - it seems.
