1. it's trivial that to correctly apply any term there must be a thing that is that thing.
2. so in the example there must be a thing that is clouds with noise in them.
3. and so there are clouds...

1 because to correctly apply a term "X", the referent must be "X".
2 because to correctly apply the term the noise in the clouds, we must apply it to clouds with noise in.
and so clouds.
there must be a referent of the term "clouds".

i'm NOT saying that clouds must exist or be present, but that there must be a referent of the term "clouds" and so there must be "clouds" - whether or not a universal, or whatever.
