I've never seen a walkman like that. Very cool.

At the simplest level its like a tape recorder, the centre dial plays recorded loops at various speeds, as well as backwards, the other functions which I've only touched on allow smaller chunks to be 'processed' and morphed... down to granular sizes. The source control - top centre fully anti clockwise monitors and allows source recording, clockwise you get the recorded loop, centre a mix of both (SOS) which again you can record to a new 'splice'. Awesome!

Why?

The phonogene is no longer made, hasn't the same CV control, isn't stereo and doesn't record as long... and those still around seem to cost more than a morphogene?

they mostly go for under $300, there was one up a few days ago for $225. One huge advantage is that on the Phonogene, varispeed controls both recording and playback speed. Morphagene always records at the same speed - varispeed controls playback, that's it.

I'm not sure how this is a huge advantage, given the max length at reasonable quality (mid fi) is only 2 seconds, whereas the morph is 2.9 minutes at hi fi ( 32-bit float, 48000Hz stereo-only .wav files). What you mean by different speeds in recording is the sample rate can be changed with the phonogene..... with the morph you can vary playback speed, and record this to another splice, so speeding up or slowing down without loss of quality.. Add to that the morph has more control via CV and is stereo I guess its a matter of choice. But for me the 2 second limit is limiting...

So I guess its choice, but I've already the Bitrazer which can lower sample rates, and then there is the 2hp Locked Looper … 9ms to 3 seconds buffer, an even cheaper alternative...

yeah - with the Phonogene you're trading sound quality for time and getting destroyed lofi vibes. Good for the type of sounds I prefer, though I understand you're not a fan of harsh stuff. As far as capability, I know it isn't really close and the Morpha is better across the board. But sound-wise, playability-wise...I'd take two phonos any day.

I'm slightly jealous of the CV outs. But not really. 8)

I'm OK with harsh. (yes a fan!) As I said the Bitrazer can get harsh, I've also the Scooper which i'm a bit disappointed with, and this might go... as did the Torcido- supposedly a distortion but not very IMO. I guess if I did sell the Scooper i'd get a 2HP looper and a Wogglebug…

Thoughts on scooper please? Was excited at the idea of not having to put it in my case, but then read somewhere (prob muffs) that the pitch shift doesn't affect speed?

Well i'm not that impressed, i suppose on the face of it, it could be thought to be similar to the Phonogene, but it samples at a fixed rate, the scatter type can produce some 'interesting' effects which tend to be 'musical', not much use in noise... and the scatter depth doesn't do much, compared with the Bitrazer where one can set a very low sample rate and reduce the number of bits to annihilate the signal. The filter on the Scooper is quite bland compared to the Bitrazer's which will self oscillate, the Scoopers filter is more a tone control, and yes the pitch change doesn't alter the sample rate, so isnt at all 'dirty'. The best results regarding noise i've got from it is to use the CV in that controls the Sync for triggering REC/Play, which if given random bursts gives an interesting output. I've used the additional software 'plug ins' (on both) but again i wasn't that impressed. (All of course IMO)
