is there any practical advantage in using this vs "normal" oscillators?
These days? Probably not but I think a long time ago it was a cheaper way to generate preset tones for electric organs than using electronic synthesis with circuits.

The guys explanation of utilising current Drone technology (precise movement of small motors etc) seems legit - which are now mass produced so i'm guessing this is way more affordable than it used to be.

the momentum involved in a motor will give it a certain sound at least slightly different to a purely synthesised tone (tho you could synthesise a similation of a motor... in fact that's exactly the sort of thing the analog computers which a lot of modular synth technology developed from would have been used for :)

Not sure of that, stepper motors used in such things as hard drives are very precise have been around for many years. And are and were mass produced.

He's just saying that these types of motors have been available and mass produced well before now so it's unlikely that the low cost is the main reason to use them over the novelty factor.

why not just get one of these industrial floor buffers?
you can charge clubs for polishing the stage at the same time as show...
they are loud yet can be even louder with contact microphones thru pedals
"rescued" one from an abandoned factory in working condition... yet its long gone
