Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is the difference between this versus an inductive pickup? They both seem to do the same thing.

Hmm... I'd recommend the first track on Pure Skin by Navicon Torture Technologies. It doesn't sound like any of the examples you mentioned per se, but as far as "melancholic" and "romantic" go, that was the very first thing that came to my mind. NTT in general should lead you down the kind of paths ...

Honestly... yeah. It was one of my first “noise” albums, bought from amazon of all places, and I was severely disappointed in contrast to the youtube videos I saw of them playing live.
