alpine (wild) strawberry

Post by fire » Tue Jun 02, 2015 6:54 am

ever had a piece of strawberry candy, and the flavor was really good but tasted different from regular strawberries?

that flavor is alpine strawberry, a somewhat rare delicacy, not available at stores much, but extremely easy to grow

i got my first two small plants from a witch at the growers market, planted them in one gallon pots for a year, then this year switched to a 20 gallon pot for the front steps, split the other pot up into about 11 starts and gave them away

seeds are available on the net, as are plants, several varieties and colors

the unique flavor and relative scarcity of these berries make them an ideal first or only plant, especially since they are hardy, grow well in containers and need minimal light

I can't remember the last time that I ate a strawberry. I've been on a blueberry kick the last few seasons.
