How do you market your noise brand?

Post by melkobukva » Mon Oct 15, 2018 2:55 pm

A) By telling people your real name and home address
B) By posing as anonymous ghoul, robot, cartoon character, giant eye, dead mouse, balaclava-wearing thug, etc, etc
C) By using tits
D) By deliberately mixing up extensional and intensional contexts.
E) Other (please specify)

For noise, I don't think there is one distinct way you can market. It's not something a lot of people would even consider a niche, so outwardly promoting something like this can often have little to no profitable reaction.

As I see it, join noise communities and try to find people who share interests in noise and support underground music. Some guys from the black metal scene are interested, others from more electronica and stuff like that. Express a lot of curiosity and always be interested in hearing something new.

All of the above.

And just think - if you think your packaging is cool, unreadable text, badly put together, no information or background it makes it harder to review. Also i'm afraid its likely to have been done before.

I think it was something like 1 in 500 or more in sales of cold calls gets any attention. So mailing out for reviews is OK but don't expect much. Generally playing live and having stuff to sell is maybe the best marketing method. Audiences get a bit drunk and carried away... ;)

Other than that the name of your project. As elsewhere - "The Brand". Its good if its short, memorable, pronounceable for americans and gets a first hit in google. Get a web site, you can do these for free. I know some here think being mysterious is cool, maybe, but generally people are curious.

Gimmicks are OK (see above - done before) Like CDs wrapped in barbed wire, dirt etc, but at the end of the day its the sound or lack that's maybe what you are about.

Finally, and this is all IMO, try to be 'clear' about your genre - and audience. (or simply dont give a shit) You go to a Chinese restaurant, you expect Chinese food. 'Avant Garde Death metal with a little drum & bass'

Oh - and if you dont think what youve done 'is fucking good' why would anyone else. So be prepared to be called an egotistical wanker.

And no "egotistical wanker" as a name - though maybe? Just googled - Paul McCartney comes #2 ! and who is he!

NAMES!!

JLIAT was not what I intended so be careful. I was mucking around
used something from a dream and made a cassette- just one with graphics
and the name JLIAT. This led to a CD which didnt do much but better than
I thought, by which time it was too late.

No one pronounces it the way i do! Jilly at.

So be careful.

There is an arts org in Scotland called Arika.
I know the guy who got the name from the Japanese Video game.
He said he thought it cool, and added 'heavy industry'

Arika Heavy Industry.

This he now regretted - it causes all kinds of problems with customs.
It makes artists getting Visas have all kinds of problems..
"you are a musician and have a booking to play in Scotland for
Arika Heavy Industries!???"
And people obviously think its a Japanese thing...

So what he first thought cool, was not so good.

I know they are cute - but how can tits sell noise?

Solomon's Tump is a hamlet in Gloucestershire, UK.

I liked the name but changed it slightly to Soloman Tump to avoid upsetting anyone who lives there.

I have not yet used tits to sell my music.

I have not yet tried to sell my music at all.

When I come up with something that I think is worthy I will probably do a photo shoot at Solomon's Tump and do a booklet / zine to go with a CD / Tape release.

if you want fame and fortune noise isnt it

marketing is mostly pandering (edward bernays), just identify what your market wants and make them believe you provide it

i market my brand by being me

You can't really be sure I'm Russian, since (A) I could have lied; (B) given what I said about myself, I could also be Ukrainian, Belorussian, Latvian, Moldavian or an Israeli Jew whose parents emigrated from the USSR. So your argument is invalid and you have to click the link, komrade.

Lots of places in the world keep changing who they are, Eastern Europe is a night mare! A guy from there once said he lived in three different counties without moving house. Add to that non of you play cricket or even know the rules!

Well - basically you are foreign - its tough for you lot i know. Time for the Flanders and Swann video.

I think jiliat's response was very intelligent. Don't be afraid to come off as egotistical. The idea should be that you're releasing your content on your own terms, and with that you should be creative in how you want to do that. This is nice because there is no general "template" on how to market content, like pop stars or whatever. The lack of foundation can be confusing, but like in all things you market, there are just some things you'll need to have a LOT of upfront cost in - time, money, effort, to release something to get at least attention. Attention and recognition should be your only concern honestly.

Here's a video of Bizarre Uproar doing a show somewhere in Finland. Making a rundown, super gritty recording of a performance to accommodate the music is a good idea to start with. Any place you can be alone, record something pretty gritty grim and downright disgusting, put it in a video and call it art baby. You got yourself MARKETING. When you look at it from that perspective people will gain interest.
