How do you pronounce Griaule anyway? "Gree-All"? "Gree-Oh-Leh"? "Grey-Ool"? "GRUEL"?
"GRee-All" is correct; at least as far as I am concerned. I stole the name from a short story " The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule", about an artist, who drunkenly came up with this idea to slay the dragon which loomed (in stasis) above their town, by painting a mural upon it with toxic pigments. "Death by Art" being the basic idea. Great story. It's in an anthology curated by Gardner Dozois? however the fuck you pronounce his name. From a quick search I just did now, apparently the author was Lucius Shepard. .

So is my pronunciation to be considered "definitive"? well, fuck you; of course it is: It's my project damn you!, fuck off!

I'm thinking (once again) of just referring to my project as "AmishRobots" to avoid all the confusion and nonsense. As if it matters...

Seems like reason enough to go your own way, regardless of whether or not people understand (or can pronounce) it. Why suffer other peoples' ignorance? Much less their corrections of yours. I don't really care how your pronounce it... Take it up with the snooty, overdressed Parisian twat that does. In saying all of this, I'm assuming, of course, you prefer "Griaule" to "AmishRabbits", based on the tone of your post.

Anyway, that's an interesting name origin story. I'm (obviously) not familiar with the story it came from. I feel sorry for the dragon, though. Doesn't sound like it was hurting anybody.

I didn't even realized it was Griaule until now.
Always read Giraule.
Or "that needy douche".

The dragon had apparently been a great terror at one time, destroying towns and villages until it reached this one, where a powerful wizard used a spell that would have destroyed it. But the spell would also destroy the wizard himself in the process. At the last second, the wizard apparently lost his nerve, so that they were both frozen in place, for hundreds of years or so, The great dragon Griaule, looming as a menace above the town.

The people came to blame the dragon for every ill that befell them, blamed it for their bad tempers, and their tendency to launch attacks on neighbouring towns. The dragon's evil influence pervaded the town for centuries. Every attempt to kill it had somehow failed due to the dragon's influence. The painting of the dragon required a huge factory built upon the dragon, to produce the massive amount of toxic pigments, more raids against neighbouring towns, hundreds of painters to carry out the artist's vision. It became his life's work, and bankrupted the town. The artist and the town all died with the dragon.

Also, there was a cult of people who came to gaze into the dragon's great, hypnotic eyes as they opened each day, and there were some sort of flying parasites that lived in his butt, and ate his excrement.

So, like, that dragon is the scapegoat by which we lose our own illusory righteousness and civility in condemning, attempting to censor and/or destroy... or something? See, I still feel bad for the dragon. The artist guy sounds like Hitler. A FAILED ARTIST.

This is a fairly valid interpretation of the story. It is rather sad when the dragon dies. You should track down the story and read it. I think you would enjoy.

I've had people pronounce Bipolar Joe "That Irish idiot." I think it's just different dialects and accents, though.
