so do you think that the scientists from the IPCC are doing good work? how can climate science be "settled"?

do you think astrophysicists are good scientists when they continously find flaws in their models of the universe but never change the dogma they spew?

I'm not sure regarding the IPCC. Are they actually doing work or advising? As for astrophysicists - they do change their dogma, famously Fred Hoyle's cosmology of a steady state universe was once regarded as far more likely than a Big Bang. I think many scientists are unhappy with cosmic inflation, and a couple of years ago Penrose gave lectures about universes before the Big Bang...

Being old, though geologically an infant, I remember some harsh winters when it was predicted we were drifting into an ice age.

What don't you understand, you claimed dogma, I gave examples to show this was not the case.

And i'm not drinking Ale, or Beer. I will be drinking cider tonight. Funny we moved just over a year ago to an area where its almost impossible to find a pub which does not do live music. My local even had Merzbow play a few years back.

That's 'The Hare and Hounds' - the other near by is 'The fighting Cocks'

uhg, no you did not, you made a passing reference to Hoyle who realized problems in the model and then tried to explain them using other flawed parts of the same model all just to make a name for himself, fail

we have a local that makes marionberry cider, to die for, and another called "bad apple" which clocks in around 10%ABV

Well you've judged the motivation before anything is said. I did not give a passing reference, Steady State once was the generally accepted cosmological model. There are many other examples in science of the current model being overturned by evidence. In biology, physics chemistry... you name it. But to avoid a TLDR I gave a fairly big example, and pointed to the current ideas which are challenging the Big Bang. Penrose et al.

Rather than engage in the argument you just dismiss it, without reason or evidence. So as everyone knows - this is how you go on- but interesting in this exchange you failed to see my point, you thought we were opposite in the idea of the provisional nature of science. But we are not.

Moreover, science NEVER tells us anything about actuality. It is a model. In science generalizations are made, which we never see in reality.
In biology we have the concept of a 'species' - but ask a biologist, in reality we see a bell curve when looking at individual animals or plants. There are many other examples, so why is science useful, how does it work, well like insurance, it deals with generalizations.

But reality is not so, it escapes all generalizations, of science, religion and thought. It why poetry, music and art can better represent reality, and in the presence of such we should shut the fuck up.

DOG = DOG - but no two real dogs ever are the same.

Your 'other words' - please! Its an abstraction.

As for alchemy - a proto science. Uses the same ideas of modern science - but perhaps mistakenly thinks its generalizations are 'real'.
The work of Aristotle is significant - he introduced the idea of categories and genera, species... and that is what alchemists work with.

So science of reality - not reality. You seem to have fallen victim of the same error. Logocentricism!

"ADJECTIVE
regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics)."

And in that the 'idea' of fundamentalism. Another myth - though useful unless one thinks it is 'real'. You really need to think more about this, like we use the word Dog or Mammoth, but these only are generalizations... each actual animal is different, and these differences spread out in a bell curve. That's modern biology. And why we occasionally get odd things - you must have read about people whose sex is difficult to define - even in terms of chromosomes?

You still seem to have an almost Victorian idea of things. Another good example is mental illness, its not a binary, one isn't 'normal' or 'crazy'... Language, words , numbers lack this fuzziness of The Real.

they are different if you only think with your eyes, not so much under the skin

dollars to donuts you will not understand this

yep, i soon will be one of those nonbinary folks, not kidding...
An Oregon judge ruled earlier this month that a transgender person can legally change their sex to "non-binary" rather than male or female, in a move that legal experts believe is a first in the United States.

Now, the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles is sorting through the ramifications of adding a third gender option to the state's driver's licenses.

words and numbers, yes, language, absolutely not, in fact, 'communicating' 'information' is 100% of the life function, so The Real

Chemicals from human cosmetics and drugs have been found in the blood of turtles living in Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Green turtles were found to have hundreds of thousands of different chemicals in their blood stream, which had caused the animals to suffer from liver dysfunction

Medications for the heart (milrinone) and gout (allopurinol), as well as cosmetic and industrial chemicals, were among substances detected in the reptiles' bloodstream as part of an ongoing conservation project.

'What you put down your sink, spray on your farms, or release from industries ends up in the marine environment and in turtles in the Great Barrier Reef,' said Amy Heffernan of the University of Queensland.

In 2015, scientists said that a chemical used in sunscreen could be causing massive damage to coral reefs worldwide and threatening their very existence.

The chemical, oxybenzone, was causing 'gross deformities' in baby coral, the study said.
