STUPID SCIENTISTS

DNA study suggests hunting did not kill off mammoth
The reason they died out has been a matter of considerable scientific debate. Some have argued that humans hunted them to extinction while others have said that changes in the climate was the main factor.

A criticism of the climate extinction argument is that the world warmed well before the creatures became extinct and so that could not have been the cause.

The new results show that mammoths did indeed nearly go extinct between Ice Ages and so backs the view that climate change was the principal cause for their demise.
so they thrive in the cold but cold killed them off. ho lee shit. ma heads unna splode.

Did you read the bit "mammoths did indeed nearly go extinct between Ice Ages "

i.e. between the cold bits... it was warmer! And that depleted their numbers....

As American science students struggle to compete with the global competition, Oklahoma is moving forward with a law that could ban Biology teachers from failing students who argue that humans co-existed with dinosaurs. The state legislator's committee in charge of education standards has approved a law that would forbid teachers from penalizing students who argue against widely accepted scientific theories, such as evolution and climate change.

"I proposed this bill because there are teachers and students who may be afraid of going against what they see in their textbooks," said Republican State Representative Gus Blackwell who sponsored the Scientific Education and Academic Freedom Act, which can now go the state legislature for a vote.

Students are not exempt from being tested on textbook material, "but no student in any public school or institution shall be penalized in any way because the student may subscribe to a particular position on scientific theories," reads the bill.

Not everyone is ecstatic about the bill, however. "An extremely high percentage of scientists will tell you that evolution doesn't have scientific weaknesses," said education director of the National Center for Science Education, Eric Meikle, to Mother Jones. "If every teacher, parent, and school board can decide what to teach on their own, you're going to have chaos. You can't deluge kids with every theory that's ever been considered since the beginning of time."

Do scientists see the world as objectively as they like to think?

Arguments have raged for years between those who regard science as an entirely objective discipline, and certain social scholars that believe science is subject to the same cognitive biases as every other human enterprise. At times, these debates have become less than polite.

In 1996, physicist Alan Sokal perpetrated an infamous academic hoax against a postmodernist journal called Social Text. Sokal submitted a paper for publication with the lavish title "Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity." It was filled with the kind of popular academic jargon familiar to postmodernist scholars. To the delight of the publishers, the eminent physicist seemed to be embracing a socially constructed view of his discipline. They duly published.

A month later, Sokal announced that his paper was a fake - a stitched-together collection of nonsense to demonstrate the lack of intellectual rigour amongst postmodernists. The journal editors were furious, accusing Sokal of a lack of ethics. Many scientists were delighted. The affair became a major episode in what is now dubbed the 'Science Wars.'
