"Cyprus considers zero tax on smaller bank deposits"

I don't think the model of aristocrats and serfs, even capitalists and workers is appropriate in the post-modern age of consumerism and communication technology which forces those 'in power' to respond to a public which has independent means of communication.. Example - despite both the press and politicians wanting to ignore the leveson enquiry- and campaigning against it - social networks have forced the government to act.

There is now a very real fundamental change in that news and communication is no longer controllable by a State and / or powerful individuals - ergo the Arab spring et al…

The market was roiled Monday when the head of euro-zone finance ministers stated that the plan for uninsured depositors to take losses in Cyprus was a "template" for any future rescues.
but wait, the ECB wanted to shiv the people with insured deposits as well. take your $ and put it in bitcoins. how could it be worse?

The article in op was written by a guy who writes regularly for "american conservative magazine" and is really dumb analysis of whats going on in cypress, which is fucked up only because the tax is regressive and imposed by outside interests who had a hand in creating the situation in the first place.

Cash for clunkers is a pretty much exactly opposite situation and comparing them is evidence of schizophrenia. "Hmm a regressive tax, pretty similar to that time the govt gave people money to buy more efficient cars durrrrrrr"

his analysis is dumb? if you had a hundred pounds of food saved up for winter and the food police wanted forty pounds of it, you wouldnt care? you wouldnt be paranoid about them coming back for more? man, yer pretty sheltered.

really? real property, worth say $1000, is turned into a loan which benefits banks. the new car doesnt belong to the "owner", therefore, not real property. it is debt, worthless debt. try selling that debt on craigslist. and if the loan is payed off, the depreciation of the vehicle puts you back at your original $1000 while the bank gladly charged you interest for wearing it out. and just a fyi, american cars arent anymore efficient than in the 80s.
