My point is that people seem to try and post the wittiest zinger before someone else can post their witty zinger when likes or whatever are involved. I'd much rather the forum continue conversationally, it's bad enough that some people try to stand out as much as they can instead of focussing on posting something worth reading.

What is worth reading is a matter of opinion.. some people only post about gear, others only post whatever noise they made recently. Very few post comments on said noise. Some people post very rarely and it's difficult to have a "conversation" with them. Some people only post insults ("zingers"). But I promise if Bob adds the like feature I'll post just as much as ever. :D

But I guess what I'm saying is that if you want the forum to be more conversational then please respond to or post content that you think is more worthy of conversation. :ontopic:

I know. That's what I was trying to imply regarding your high post count. Consider it a comment to your credit. I know not everyone is fond of your posting style (or Laura's, or Daric's, or...), but it's something at least.

FWIW, I'm also not trying to imply that anyone who posts memes is literally a "zitty, virginal nerd" or whatever I said either. I just think it's really strange how that aspect of historically geeky "Internet culture", once the domain of a segment of the population that could essentially be boiled down to "nerds and outcasts" (myself included), has become a part of everyday life for "normal" people (remember, they're the bad guys here!). It's gone so far that memes are featured on fucking protest signs and shit. I think that is really strange, and perhaps even not great.

Also, I understand what you were saying, Joe. Kudos systems and people shitposting in hopes of scoring Internet points through them is no new thing. What I was trying to get at is that, as problematic as that kind of system already has been historically, I can only see it being made worse by the current state of online communication, Internet culture proliferation, and the unsettling notion that Internet memes can and should (and, in fact, do) have legitimate cultural impact in today's "normal people" world.

I'm just trying to make conversation mostly. So if this all sounds terribly contrived, well... you got me!

Hey conversation is good.. but I think a bigger problem is cynicism and whiffs of noise is serious business is worse.

Apparently we have a "kudos" system already which is the post count! LOL

I dunno.. I saw the 'like' thing on another phpbb forum and I thought it was a good idea and a good way to show that you appreciate something without wasting a post about it. I guess because it's called "like" it has the association of facebook to it which makes it bad although I'm pretty sure kudo system idea originated on forums before facebook.

Y'know it seems like people in the noise scene have a hard time expressing themselves with words and I've also noticed a number of people complaining about not getting any feedback about their work. So I saw a solution in the like thing.. good luck prying words from the wordless.

Personally I'm in the process of writing reviews for review websites.. it's alot of work to write quality reviews. It's really hard to write good noise reviews of any length. I mean for HNW especially .. I dunno seems to me that for HNW it's either like or don't like.. somebody should write an HNW review generator.

doesnt supplanting reactive comment with like button mashing defeat conversation?

how many of you have gone down to the bus station and struck up a conversation with the looniest person there? yeah, that works great.

i mean, i can converse with the worst of us, i converse the shit out of a subject, until its raw and bloody and i have offended everyone standing around, that homeless fuck at the bus station is pissed now, i tell you whut

but thats not what most want in a conversation, mostly the adults just want to pitch some bitch, calmly and quietly mind you, commiserate, talk shop, get validated, glean a little about moving up that food chain

or bragging, gawd i love a braggard, they love that irritated look you get, they hate me when i smile like a dick and say "god licked my brain", then i implore them to continue with the cool story bro(bonus points: stop them at any point and claim you dont understand what they just said, pick a totally obvious wrong subject and insist that is what they meant, pure gold)

in conclusion.

ps, the internet is where conversation went to die, look at all the bones!

Xdugef, you're one of my favourite Internet friends, and the majority of your posts are worth reading. I've used a bunch of forums that introduced a likes system, and post quality went down every time. Cause and causation, yadda yadda, I know, but seeing the same thing happen on gay sites like reddit (The absolute worst offender in this case), it's too hard to ignore.

Noise forums kind of died a minor death a while ago, and it's started coming back around to being comfy now. If I wasn't busy I'd definitely post more.

Put it in red and it will stand out better.

Anyway, Joe's right, I know because I am (was) part of the problem. But it's a lost war now.
We are Post-Conversationists now.

I'll be the first to acknowledge my own cynicism, but I agree: Cynicism is (to me) a psychological/philosophical quagmire to be gotten out of, not worn on t-shirts. Yet I am capable of being a very cynical, nihilistic, self-destructive person at times. I consider that a personal shortcoming, but also a somewhat unavoidable part of who I am at this point in my life. I see old posts of mine and I wonder what happened to the spazz kid that I used to be. He seems like such an annoying idiot to me now, though a good deal happier. Either way, I find it difficult to indulge in the same kind of posting now. I'm not sure how much of my hesitance to be more like 18 year old me is the product of legitimate, depressive de-motivation/cynicism/negativity, or just good old fashioned, getting older (read: more curmudgeonly)/more self-conscious. It's probably a healthy mix of both. Fuck knows I haven't seriously "grown up" since I first came here. I can't stand stuffy, humorless, academic seriousness/intellectualism and insincere, commodified negativity in noise or anywhere else. It's just difficult for me to be as "fun" and "care-free" as I used to be without feeling embarrassed or afraid of how it might affect my already poor self image and my own bleak perception of how others view me. Again, another quagmire.

FWIW, I can take or leave a kudo/karma/upvote system. I hope I didn't seem to be completely shitting on the idea. But I certainly see the possible negative impact (Reddit [and it's associated image host, imgur, which I used to be very active on] is a perfect example). I don't want to shoot down the idea completely, though. I don't think it could do any significant "damage" to this place, given the incredibly light traffic it already sees.

I think noisniks are (generally) an odd bunch. I mean that in a purely objective sense, not in a critical or romantic one. It's just how it is. I don't think I have ever met (in real life, not online) a "noise guy" who was 100% on top of things, myself included. Point is, I agree that a lot of us have difficulty with communication and self-expression. Some kind of feedback system may very well be useful in that regard. I know there have been "track review" threads. Possibly here, but also on the old Troniks board. Writing cogent/non-shit reviews (especially for noise) is definitely not easy, though (ask every Metal Archives reviewer ever... most of them are worthless). Harder still is being critical without having to worry about some dysfunctional harsh noise loony taking it personally. I don't think I'm cut out for that stuff, but I certainly support an album/track review initiative.

In fact, that's probably one sure-fire way to get traffic here: Make it a destination for noise reviews!

Speaking of surprises, did you hear Daniel (Maso) got a girlfriend? I still can't believe it. I've barely heard from him since.
Also, congratulations (news to me as well).
