Feels like it's been a while since I posted gear pictures, here's one for my set this evening:

Had to ask, didn't look like a custom decal but you never know.

I'm with joe: I can only guess at what those things are, let alone what they sound like.

[view] is killer, saw a set where he used the power outlet as signal source, iirc
broadcasting from the post-internet wasteland

Ah, the cascading transformers, so yeah - 60 hz at the wall stepped down, down, down (couple volts now), down to something like 600 mV and on into the mixer.

No, not that one. I was feeding a mono PA. I will be in touch in a short while (my time, sorry about the glacial pace) for info on that particular thing, got your CD last week, always a pleasure.

I used a very similar set up over ten years ago to make this: https://view.bandcamp.com/album/orbit-decay

I did record last nights set, but had the recorder set to microphone even after I plugged direct from mixer so the recording is.... substandard.

This was the result of several recording sessions, starting this morning and ending late this afternoon. I added/rearranged things throughout the day, so it ended up being a huge mess, as usual. It looked relatively tidy when I started out this morning.

Essentially, it's a feedback loop with two passive ring modulators inside the loop. Both of them are being modulated simultaneously by a secondary feedback loop via the mythical/much-maligned Y-splitter cable. There's a few other little things going on, but that's the most exciting aspect of this setup. I've had a lot of fun with it.

It's awesome to see the triangle ring mod in action after all these years!

Mhm, mhm. I still break it out from time to time. The second passive ring modulator I used is out of view, but it's the other one you sent me in the black box. I have that one mounted to the wall behind the patch bay, and patched into the back for easy access.

Due to cable shortages, the triangle RM has been out of rotation for a while (it used to be patched into the back along with the black box RM), but I plan to patch it back in permanently, whenever I can get around to buying or making some extra cables. There's never enough.

I remember you did some ringmod experiments years ago, like plugging the same sound source into each input, that were really interesting. Is this set up for the laugh or for FGFY?

In just the last 3 months, I cleaned house on my external hard drive. I think I deleted a bunch of old setup pics, thinking they'd outlived their usefulness, because I can't find them anywhere. So, I'm disappointed that I don't have those photo references now, but I think I know what you're talking about. I can remember a few examples, like modulating two portable recorders "against" one another. And another, which involved hooking a ring mod and distortion in a loop and having the feedback be modulated by a guitar signal (I can't remember exactly how I wired that up, but I remember it sounding really good). There was also one where I had an NES hooked up to one input. I think I was either modulating the music of Golgo 13 with pre-recorded audio from Shadowgate via one of the digital recorders, or modulating another signal with the audio output from individual game cartridges.

I don't have samples of any of this stuff, but I would like to try to replicate some of these setups when I have more time.

Everything I do is for laughs. But also, the above setup was used for a compilation track I submitted under FGFY. The comp call Krump posted about took me to the noise comps subreddit, where I saw a post requesting ring mod-based noise submissions. I couldn't resist that.
