New To Noise: Many questions!

Post by Star Cage » Wed Aug 01, 2018 11:49 am

Hello all,

I am very new to noise music. I have a few questions. I have been experimenting with my microphone and guitar by using a pedal, feedback and even an office fan. This has made me feel that I am capable of making noise music, although what I have done so far has obviously been simplistic and amateurish. I'd like to know

1. whether getting an oscillating module would be a good purchase in terms of helping me to experiment further.

2. I would also like to know how one could go about manipulating audio recordings using a modular synthesizer? Would I be able to take an audio recording from my laptop and manipulate it through a synthesizer?

3. Can you send an oscillating wave through a guitar pedal?

Apologies if I used any of the technical jargon incorrectly. Many thanks for reading this. Google throws up too much irrelevant info when I try to find out these things.

It's another tool, sure. Whether or not it is a good fit for you and the direction you face is really up to you though. My advice for those starting out - buy stuff used, and watch the market if you're a burgeoning gear head. That way, if you hate something or it's not a good fit you can pass it along at less of a hit to your wallet.

Yes, but be aware that most modular synth stuff operates on higher voltages, so directly plugging your computer output, while safe, will result in a smaller than normal signal to the modular. Devices to correct and normalize levels are available though, so worry not, you just have to be mindful of losses and gains in the domain change department.

Sure. If that wave is coming from a modular, you might want to turn it down a bit, either with an aforementioned level changer, or studious use of a volume control.

HAVE FUN

Thank you so much for these helpful responses. I'm very grateful.

Something like this maybe. Also, I don't mean to be rude but isn't your avatar a reversed image of a banned nationalist organisations logo?

I'm a hardware guy. These days I mostly use my own builds in conjunction with the occasional tubed oscillator and some sort of mixing unit, though I'm overdue to dust off a drum machine/MIDI set-up (that can arguably place my given work outside the "noise" sphere). You can listen to older work here if you like: https://view.bandcamp.com/

In the big scheme of things, I'm probably an "easy listening" subset of noise. 8)

You'll have to forgive us, as we have not been wholly successful in escaping stupidity around here. You will find both anti-fa and fascism fetishists/apologists/what-have-you around these parts, and sadly the dialog often finds a way of spilling over into gear and other realms of hallowed ground.

Smoke 'em if you've got 'em. :pint:

Your music is cool!

Yeah I don't wish to argue with anyone or make any enemies but I wouldn't feel comfortable acting friendly with any racists, I have to say.

we are not "Apologists"
you can have your views
plus you will end up in jihadi jail if you don't follow party lines on internet in UK

have fun
you have every right to say what you feel
"McFeels"
if we were gay pedo transgender african muslim refugee rapists would that make you feel more comfortable?

Thanks! I've suffered a prolonged lapse of output. That'll change at some point though, I've been feeling the recording itch for a while again.

around here if you need help with tech and/or gear people are helpful
if you want playing politics it can get messy fast
