I dunno if I'm alone on this, but they seem really gimmicky. Just a pre=built lunetta, really. Neat if you can't be arsed making one yourself, but not at the price point they want.

yeah that Ocoast is entry level Noob single voice module
standard recommendation for starters on MUFF
wouldn't toss it out
yet wouldn't pay very much for it either
ummm not desperate or famished for modular VCOs(have 10+ not even regularly using)
plus can somewhat easily just get off my ass for making more if need them
besides that the price point on Ocoast is pretty fucking high
IMO

Thanks both for this. As for self build, its a non starter for me. I have some Emu 1u rack synths, extreme lead .. etc, which
if I sell I might think about getting something like this, there is also a Beh…. OMG mustn't say, Neutron... but looks a bit typical.

Looks like something I can't afford + It's most likely not even a justifiable price for beep-boop boxes: Instantly uninterested.

there are so many options... "exponential" anymore(as in rate of growth).... honestly
would actually say see about some midi CC/sysex action with you EMU racks
if you want some other modular suggestions at lower price point
ask
sure people here would be happy ranting about their modular gear
yet like stated
experiment getting the most out of your EMU racks before selling

Well the programming is tedious on the Emus, but I've also a Proteus 2500 which has the Extreme Lead etc cards fitted so I dint really need them ... as for computer control that's OK (I've a few midi VB.net programs for this) but I've been messing with a Korg Ms20 mini doing real time stuff and its kinda fun.

Here ya...
use my original first series korg 35 ms20 whenever possible
with expander x911
mainly because it's easy access plugged up patched in
within arms length reach
also was obsessed with that machine for ages
(lusted after old room mates way back when would play it whenever possible for recording)
also lost count of how many eye have repaired/refurbished over the years
so you could say "intimate" with the machine
Midi CC/sysex can be nightmare bitch sometimes
especially sysex
yet the payoffs can totally worth the effort
if you want expanding with your ms20 mini there are bunch of options
yet take into consideration the hertz/trig
if you can do stripboards...
can give you some expander module designs for using with Korg MS
proteus 2500 looks like loads of potential

You don't know tedious until you've programmed a DX7/DX200, hahaha!

In all honesty, I know you're smart enough to be able to build your own beep-boop boxes, you're no slouch in the brain department, and you can buy rakes of ICs for less than the chassis will cost you.

+1 on making your own modules and/or starting with DIY populating PCBs
BTW Does that include DX11...
have DX programming book for that machine...
uses some SYSEX editor
will program some compllex atmospheric patch
taking long ass time
then be like ugh... SOB... did it really just take THAT LONG
only use that machine for "solid bass" & midi controller
needless to say it doesn't get used much anymore
yeah well

Yeah, pretty much any DX series synth is a massive drag to program, but immensely satisfying when you get a result.

Seconded. Just spend some time here http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-160.html + get a few breadboards, a standard assortment of common resistor, capacitor and pot values, a load of jumper wire and a good selection of CMOS 4000 series chips

You can also experiment with VCVrack before purchasing/building specific modules
without having "real" hands on experience with them
for attempting getting an emulated idea/feel of some modules "functions"
https://vcvrack.com/
personally don't use VCV rack
(or design modules using their SDK)
merely sharing some info...

if you are just making "HNW"
why do you even "need" modular synth anyways
Expensive....
"optics"???
maybe you should consider investing in some other gear
like this:

so you can both suck & blow
in style
don't forget your contact microphones/pedals
