Unconventional Use Of A DBX 118

Post by MKULTRA » Wed May 16, 2018 10:30 am

Pondering the possibilities of pushing this unit into new sonic territories.
It needs a cap job anyway so if I've got it opened up and my soldering iron is in it's heated state, what the hell.
Any suggestions?

it's actually a good unit stock for upgrading
replace/upgrade all the electrolytic caps
with phillips audio grade or something on par
it's probably a we bit noisey now over that much time
Image
sort of want one
yet have more than enough modified compressors now
what are the DBX vca chips?
get the number on those chips
look at pinout
see if they can be replaced with THAT 2180 or 2081
Image
some burr brown ops amps will make that little box pure sweatness
plus research doing THAT upgrade if those are lower quality DBX VCA chips
for making that unit way like DBX 160 sound quality
also add 1/4" ins/outs
~shrug~
that's my "conventional" suggestion
btw nice find

Keep the old DBX VCAs

Burr Brown Opamps were put in to replace the old 4558's in both the input and output stages.

All of the electrolytic's were replaced with high quality upgrades.

A PSU modification with bypassing for the lowest possible noise.

The Burr Brown modification on these units in conjunction with the re-cap just makes these units sound warm, large, dynamic and musical.

It can best be described as being: Warmer, with broader frequency response, increased headroom and a better three dimensional image.

The power supply is the main culprit in cleaning them up.

Allot of these older units can be improved by way of some amp power supply mods (clean power works), improving OP amp performance specs and such. For one thing advances in component innovations & performance have continued since good ol Burr Brow got bought out decades ago:acknowledging their innovation achievements . The dbx's can be improved without touching the VCAs.

Obviously it's not a dbx 160 yet it can be made more useful

My experience with dynamic enhancers (not that model though) is that they run out of headroom too fast if you're not feeding it compressed signal locked into whatever level window you have set.

How far can you push the rails to sidestep this feature?

;)
