to come up with ideas to mod a record player, you just need to understand how it works.

this is how the record needle gets stereo
http://www.vinylrecorder.com/stereo.html

the four wires in this picture are for the two pairs (L and R) of audio outputs, they send out unamplified signals (just like a microphone)
http://turntabling.net/wp-content/uploa ... needle.jpg

the signals then go through a 'phono amplifier' which not only amplifies the signal, but also puts it through an equalisation curve
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization

There are also belt drive and direct drive turntables.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-drive_turntable
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt-drive_turntable

that should be enough information for you to conceptualise your own modifications.

78rpm records sound like doom at 16 speed.

16rpm, sounds awesome. Reminds me of how more evil tapes would sound once the battery was close to empty.

Not really a mod but a nice thing anyway: Svartvit used a locked groove Vomir 7" and fed it through some distortions. The degradation of the medium caused a change in texture.

Emil Beaulieau had some modded record players to make harsh noise.
yeah - he modded them by playing other people's harsh noise records on them :D
(seriously tho yep he had some modded ones; they had extra arms, and also a cartridge not on an arm but just on the end of a cable so you can play the record or any object manually...)

another idea would be to make the record player go backwards. depending on how it's driven that may or may not be easy, also it may wreck non-DJ needles i guess.

Or even play it backwards WITHOUT a mod: one DJ/turntablist gimmick is to turn the cartridge upside-down, adjust the counterweight so the arm goes up instead of down, and play the underside of a record on a roll of gaffer tape placed on the turntable :D

you could play these - and they are

1) harsh

2) the harshness is objective - Sanding Discs 15pc - 3 Grades
