I'm betting he'd like to see you break down. To see you go through the sort of rampant frustration that you have doled out using only words. That sort of thing.

I have no suggestion for software.

Smoke crack, that will mask the dirty smell of nicotine well.

Maybe later today.
It's a Crate XT10, btw.
I'd like to take a gut shot of the similar EL-10G I have but it's proven to bee a pain in the ass.
Seems like the XT10 is a tad cleaner volume-wise: "2" on the master volume on the XT is equal to a "1" on the EL's master volume.
Of course, that could just mean it's old or put through more abuse but I digress.

what the cigarette smoke smell means is that somebody smoked around it. Yes, smoking around sensitive electronics can damage them. That's why all those fancy PA systems in smokey bar/club/venues never worked (back when you could smoke in a fucking bar!) Oh wait, they did work, you're just being paranoid. Your typical crate amplifier is not nearly so sensitive and delicate a piece of hardware as say, your computer. Crate, and many other amplifier companies have been building these things for decades with the understanding that they would be kicked around, overdriven, and evven played in smokey ass clubs. I imagine they know what they were doing when they built this thing, it should be fine.

Nicotine tar can build up on sensitive electronics, (like a computer) gum up delicate little mechanical things, cloud the lens on your cd player, coat certain really sensitive components till they overheat, maybe even cause shorted/broken circuits on certain electrical contacts. Tar from cigs is not self replicating, so unless your amp came with a cigar-smoking midget inside of it, whatever damage was done to your amp is most likely already done, and over with. If it works fine now, I imagine it will continue to work fine, until you abuse it in some other fashion. Feel free to spray febreze on the exterior of the amp, and if you feel like being super-picky and overly paranoid, take it apart and use rubbing alcohol to clean off any tar residue that you find. I wouldn't bother with that part though; taking it apart and fucking around with it to solve a non-existent problem is IMO more likely to damage it than just leaving it the heck alone.
