Amp owned by smoker - wat do?

Post by FireAlarmPoet » Sat Apr 27, 2013 12:23 pm

Okay, so I went grage saling today and fuckin' BANKED.

Among other things I got a tiny Crate amp, about the same size & functionality as my other Crate amp, only newer/nicer.

Only problem is it smells like cigarettes when you get your nose right up to it (and I didn't notice this when I bought it :wall: )

I heard cig smoke is hell on electronics, so should I open it up & air it out? Should I do more than that, or is it fine on it's own?

I suppose it couldn't hurt to air it out as long as you don't damage it.

"Only problem is it smells like cigarettes when you get your nose right up to it"

Don't stick your nose on it, genius. This is such a non-problem, is sort of mind-boggling that you're even ask.

I had a tiny crate amp that also smelled (as in, reeked [as in, made my entire room smell like stale cigarette smoke]).

It worked fine until I blew it the fuck up.

My best advice is to quit being a helpless baby and try sitting down and using your own brain to come up with possible solutions. Chances are, even you could come up with something...

Like, IDK... wiping it down for one thing... WHOA! Who'da thunk?!
(now let's get creative)
Like setting (non-burning, duh) incense inside the cavity for a long time...
Like rubbing the inside and outside's non-electronic portions with diluted essential/aromatherapy oil(s). Something that'll mask the smell and also hopefully mask the scent of rotting semen in your room. There's lots and lots of lovely scents to choose from.
Like cleaning the board and back of the speaker as best you can with q-tips and a cloth dampened with some high-concentrate isopropyl alcohol.

Shit wuz really hard. I had to think about it for an entire minute! Pay me. ;_;

Setting it outside in the shade on a dry day (or two) certainly wouldn't hurt either, I don't think. Just don't leave it out in the baking sun, wet cold or humid air.

Working:

1x tronic turntable (speaker is busted, need to find right attachment to bust it open & fix it)
1x playskool cassette recorder w/ micm (thought it had a vox changer, didn't)
1x phineas & ferb voice changer (^.^)
1x 1/8" cassette splicer (!!!)
1x Hot Hot Heat - Make Up The Breakdown CD (girl wrote "lead singer is hot - they rock!" on the disc, lol)
2x extremely small walkie talkies, one with a strange high-pitched squeal (planning on making some sort of wireless preamp/shitty oscillator with them)
2x big aluminum ice skate boxes (makes lots o' din)

Junked:

1x keyboard (saved the speakers for turntable)
2x telephone baby toys (speakers were both junk; battery packs corroded beyond repair)

and some other shit I can't remember naymore ahahah

Cigarette odor usually goes away in a few weeks, I wouldn't worry about it.

Only stuff tar will really affect are switches and moving/slip contacts. Actual amp circuitry (we're just talking solid state here) could be dipped in epoxy or rubber and still work just fine, aside from thermal insulation at power sections.
I have no suggestion for software.

Money is 5th paragraph down in Blunt Instruments.
I've posted this one before and probably is tl;dr for those with a microwave mentality.
Unless you've heard the song nice and loud on vinyl, it really is hard to appreciate fully. YMMV.

fyi it's not the smell itself I care about, it's what the smell means.

I smell a smelly smell, but all I give a shit about is if it fucks up the machine or not.

I can tolerate cig smell if it only has about an inch of range.

Anyways, thansk for all the input: I ended up opening up the back (easiest thing I've ever unscrewed & put back together), set it outside and put my mom's fan on the now open back at the highest setting for ~30 minutes. I put in a little air freshener (the fancy shit, not like febreze) jsut to be safe, but not too much. Didn't really eliminate the smell, but after looking at the nearly flawless [and dustless] guts I'm satisfied enough.

This post is a fine example of how you can:
a) be an asshole and keep NG shitty, because you don't like someone on the internet
b) try to be helpful and advance the thread further
c) be helpful
d) be helpful and explain beyond it
e) even if you are an asshole and probably dislike the poster, you can take the information shown and up the ante, making the thread glorious by talking about tape loops and reaching an analysis of the recording of a 10cc track

Usually we choose the A option... :|
