Described thusly......
1/2 of a recorder with a contact mic flush to the opening at the end.

Okay, assuming you're still lurking out there, I gotta ask:

What the fuck is this thing?

This device has perplexed me more than all others; I can only guess the leftmost portion is an output while the other portion is some human contact noisemaker, but then why is there a cable visible if it's on a block? My dad has something similar to the leftmost portion, though I never bothered to ask him about it; to me this thing looks like a turn-of-the-century pencil sharpener.

It is a simple feedback device that is utilized hand-held, worn on a strap or table-top stationary mode.

Made with nice block of mahogany and a pickup from a 1955 Les Paul Special and a straight wired output jack mounted in a flipped Stratocaster jack plate.

Just a variation on a theme.

It is a live sampling device that he fed processed sounds into the mouthpiece.
Clever enough to be sure. The thing that got me back in 1986 when I saw Mr. Collins was that the slide had the remote for an Ursa Major Digital Reverb mounted on it. Realtime acoustic pitch control and onboard signal processing control. On a trombone.

I use that Eric Dolphy quote quite often because I believe in the concept. Sometimes sounds exist for as long as they exist and that is that.

With most of the things I build I have pretty good idea of what I want them to do. Typically, the concept works within the confines of the thought experiment. Getting outside, discovering sonic surprises is where it is at.
tl;dr: "I'm too ashamed of my output to do anything but stare at a bunch of tapes I recorded collecting dust."
Necro post shout out.

FAP a few years ago I would have dismissed your comment as - he just doesn't get it. I'm curious if your comment holds true now. I can still say that I have not recorded anything I've done in 8+ years. I just have no interest. I am the far end of the bell curve. I would like to put something together as a point in time document but I do not have a focused body of work to fall back on. My wife is a painter and has all the fancy letters after her name we often refer to the body of work and the focus of an artist at a given time. Context is everything and I have nothing interesting to me to even pursue exploration. Non-idiomatic free improv, maybe. But, time does not allow it.

I suppose I could record me tuning my shortwave radio. That's the only thing remotely " sonically controlled and modified by me " I do with any regularity. But, really, that would just be clever wouldn't it?
