New split about Yugen with Naoki Ishida released on label Appliance Japan. Thanks to Mik and Naoki!)

http://appliance-gen.org/zk01/

Reviews of splits with Naoki Ishida and Brandkommando on Vital Weekly 889!Thanks to Frans.

Dao De Noize/Naoki Ishida

More music by Artem Pismenetsku, also known as Dao De Noize, from Russia. In both of these cases split releases with others. On the first he works with Naoki Ishida, who previous work we reviewed in Vital Weekly 566 and 774 (not exactly an over productive musician!) on one track, while delivering a long solo piece and Ishida also delivering three solo pieces. In total an hour worth of music. In Dao De Noize's long piece it evolves around a few notes drone and some field recordings and a bit of other synthesizers dropping in and out. Its more ambient than noise, and a firm step forward from his previous work. It flows calmly into the short collaborative piece, which in return flows into the first Ishida solo piece. His music of the past was guitar and field recordings, delicate, crackling stuff, but here either transforms his guitar playing beyond anything that even sounds remotely like a guitar, or he turned all electronics. Whereas his previous releases had some 12K sensibilities, here its all more common place in the land of cosmos. Looped around synth sounds, all rather in a mid range, non-effort, not asking anything, just go with the flow. Comparing this with his previous releases, I would think this is a bit less: too easy to do in terms of creation. We have a bit of sound running and that's it. That's what it sounds like. It's not bad, but sounds perhaps without inspiration?

Brandkommando/Dao De Noize

The other split is on cassette and is with Brandkommando. Each has two tracks, one on each side. Brandkommando, the name states it probably, is a noise act, but not necessarily a wall of noise. Lots of synths and effects here. Its not easy to tell where a track stops and the next begins, so I might be guessing wrong here. Its hard to say what is by Brandkommando and what is by Dao De Noize, as what he does here seems to be close enough to each other. Noise inspired drone music, not unlike that of the kind of his earlier releases. It's a side of Dao De Noize which pleases me less I think, and Brandkommando's power electronics with vocals is also something that I think sounds alright but it just is not my kind of music. It seems all gimmick and not enough content. I might be entirely wrong of course.

Review of Dao De Noize/Naoki Ishida split appeared on Igloo electronic music magazine.

A new Split Series inaugurated by Dao De Noize and Naoki Ishida, on which the pair share a single track bookended by solo work. In fact, it is split and split again, as it features remixes by a further two artists. Like Indian ragas, the pieces seem composed and arranged to be played at specific times of day, following the sun across the sky. Despite the punked-out Buddhist monicker, Dao De Noize is from Kharkiv in the Ukraine and his opening "Clear View (Yugen)" is an epic, resplendent marriage of ablative electric static and shoreline field recording with small, round bells, stretching nearly twenty-four minutes. Trembling as they become "Clear Noon" by the duo, Loran C remixes them into an exhilarating state of pure ambient shimmer.

Naoki Ishida-from whose distinctive solo catalog the present reviewer heartily recommends Light Scaped the World? and Tone Redust-begins his solo turn at "Forenoon," followed by "Dawn" (perhaps the clock is going backwards because some sounds are?) and a remix of the latter by Osaka "ethereal drone" duo Sarry. "Forenoon" shears some of the peal off those bells into thin, curling slices festooning deeper, mesmerizing, sustaining tones. "Dawn" is misty and fog horns blare in the distance as the harbor awakes. The remix bleeds all the color out of this scene, revealing black and gray wraiths and ghost ships in all their tatters. A remarkably rich and coherent disc considering all the hands involved.

Review of album Voice appeared on Vital Weekly webzine #914. Thanks to Frans

In the last few years I have been to Russia a few times, and every time I am there the conversation is directed towards the work of Muslimgauze. Obviously due to the fact of any previous liaison to Staalplaat from this end, one assumes (wrongly) that I met him and liked his music. On both instances: I didn't and I don't. I can see why people like Muslimgauze, as he surely had an unique voice in music, combining samples from ethnic music with harsh rhythms of his own; middle eastern chants combined with his own tabla banging. A lot of his work always seemed a bit unfinished, like ideas thrown to tape and shipped off to said record company. It became, I guess, part of his esthetic to do so. There is still great admiration for Muslimgauze's music, even fifteen years after his sudden death. So I can understand why Ukrainian artist Doa De Noize wants to do a tribute, but how to go about with such a thing? That is a bit harder I guess. Dao De Noize takes all the ingredients of Muslimgauze, the tabla's, the raga like drones, the chanting and mixes that with a bit of noise from himself into three long pieces. These pieces sometimes seem to contain more pieces within, just like some of Muslimgauze's work did, and one wonders: why not cut them up into smaller pieces? Maybe in the Muslimgauze days harder to do with DAT machines, but nowadays, with computers and such? I may not be Muslimgauze's biggest fan, but some of his releases I liked, and I may have heard them all; so I can fairly say that Dao De Noize's tribute is a brave attempt in sounding like his idol, but he lacks some of the refinement that Muslimgauze also seemed to have, despite the quick work around methods. Dao De Noize is more of the brutal force kind without such refined. But you never know: suppose Dao De Noize fancies himself the new Muslimgauze and produces a similar endless stream, then of course that might change. No doubt the Eastern die-hards, who even organize nights of solely Muslimgauze, would be open to such a follow-up, I can imagine. Me? I'd be rather be ambivalent about this.
