Elizabeth Went & Julie Bonzon your Academia "Noise" experts present:
Octagon Friday Forum: Noise

In Image Matters: Archive, Photography, and the African Diaspora in Europe (2012), Tina M. Campt analyses family archives through the conceptual frameworks of sound and music. In a critique of the notion of ‘transparency’, Campt argues that photographs should be ‘listened to’, instead of simply being looked at, in order to understand their broader cultural meanings, translations and articulations. Incorporating sound and music within her visual analysis, Campt not only succeeds in shortcutting the ‘self-evident’ dimension of photography, but also highlights continuity and breaks within lens-based practices, as well as within a broader socio-historical ‘harmony’.

This panel will look at the notion of 'noise', either sonic or visual, as a strategy to challenge hegemonic norms. Presentations should ideally address one of the following questions: how do visual practitioners historically considered as 'others' use noise as a disruptive strategy to engage their postcolonial – or decolonial – present moment? How can noise be investigated to address notions of temporality (e.g. echoes, reverberation), colonialism (e.g. continuity/interruption, voices and stories that cannot be heard or exist in other ‘registers,’ blurs and filters, notions of testimony) and gender politics (e.g. noise/silence, breaking silence, #metoo, sexual stigma)? And finally, what dilemmas and intersubjective encounters are at stake when a researcher chooses to address what he/she can't 'see'?

The only thing Idiocracy got wrong is how quickly we will achieve moronic dystopia. 500 years? More like 50... or 15.

And then people say my story about 'Masculinity in Context of Musical Deprivation in Postcolonial Maritime Spaces' is unrealistic :chin:

"And finally, what dilemmas and intersubjective encounters are at stake when a researcher chooses to address what he/she can't 'see'?"

My problem with this concept is there is nothing added to the narrative of an image by adding any form of sound - real or imagined. It only manipulates the viewer. Visual is not auditory. What sound is a deaf person listening to when observing a photograph ?

Re: Eddie Adam's photograph of General Nguyen Loan summarily excecuting a Vietnam Cong prisoner in the streets of Siagon. No sound is going to " add to the narrative ". What adds to the narrative is knowing what General Loan knew, what the prisoner had done and the end result.

Yet that image was instrumental in solidifying the anti-war movement. But General Loan handled the issue quickly and effectively. Bleeding hearts don't want to know about the atrocities committed by Captain Bay Lop. He killed Lt.Colonel Nguyen Tuan's six children, his wife and mother by slitting their throats in front of him before killing Tuan.
War is hell and General Loan took care of a problem. Incidentally he was the head of the South Vietnamese police force.

So tell me now how sound adds anything to the picture?

General Nguyen Loan just did what needed being done & he was rather "nice" about it
considering...
why waste time with liars & lawyers
that should have been commercial for hammerless .38 S&W
instead of communist propaganda

by their own accord Image Matters
Optics
whilst they debate gender politics (e.g. noise/silence, breaking silence, #metoo, sexual stigma)
finding pictures of them helps the observer/reader get perspective

+ surely academia, however 'silly' you might consider it, is pretty much of the opposite of the joke in Idiocracy
surely modern "Institutionalized" Academia has become major culprit in the process of indoctrinated "dumbing down"
complete Agenda driven mobilized army of indentured debt slaves that must conform with Political Correctness
or brutally suffer from stasi styled "decomposition" methods controlling/destroying any opposition/resistance
Academia has been completely subverted/usurped/weaponized

It's about social(engineering)control
training/rewarding loyal Proletariat
through process of keeping them ignorantly programmed with propagated lies
whilst they foolishly think they are becoming intellectuals

There may be some truth in some of this, but without some evidence its unsupported claims... at best.... wild conspiracy 'theories' at worse..

If you haven't already observed the evidence then you haven't been paying attention at all or oblivious
maybe you have another reason for ignoring evidence
there is an overwhelming abundance of evidence in front of your eyes
yet if you wish calling it "conspiracy theory" then you may already be heavily indoctrinated
perspectives
these are all facets for taking into consideration
how about first we ask why does political correctness dictate while coinciding with left political agendas
at the point of violently silencing supposed "free speech"
no free grant money if you challenge rather than support agenda
plus you can kiss your tenurer goodbye
get in line or get gone
yet we can at least say some things you can't online
without facing 3 years in prison for mundane tweet or facebook post
Question the number "6 million" in Germany and your ass will instantly be behind bars
regardless if you were alive then like Ursula Haverbeck
there's absurdly abundant mountains of "evidence"
or maybe it's just all my "Toxic Masculinity"
Do you remember when "PC Gender Studies" wasn't considered a "requirement"?
anyways society has gone completely insane yet what else is new
~shrug~
Pythagoras supposedly endured/suffered this type of social shit also for the audacious crime of being too "logical"

I asked for you to present evidence. I'm aware of dumbing down, and have evidence - but not to the extent you seem to say.

Again I would want some examples of this. The most violent suppression at the moment is not on political correctness or
leftish politics but on fundamental Islam.

Oh dear. I think he also killed one of his students for letting some truth about arithmetic public.

But as i said - you've presented no evidence, and implied that anyone asking for evidence is obviously not paying attention.
Well i am paying attention, to what you stated "Academia has been completely subverted/usurped/weaponized" -and all you have done so far is bring up holocaust denial in Germany!

I was till recently socialist (Not a Marxist) , so voted Labour or Liberal to keep a conservative candidate out. But with recent events I've given up on politics of any colour, including the monster raving loony party - (you missed them)

As for academia and the humanities, yes there are some strange courses. Partly because in the UK we have adopted more USA style funding, so the customer dictates. Then we turned all the polytechnics into universities, and franchised courses, in effect to keep youth unemployment down.

But add to that the technical nature of fairly ordinary work, need for IT skills etc.

Also its very easy from the outside to mock the humanities, especially by picking on a few isolated events. And a media which is far from being objective... But on the whole i'd say education is a good thing. But given the current model in the UK tutors are tasked with keeping up student numbers and updating management, rather than either teaching or doing original work.
