You're awesome!

I think this would take me about two months to download on my connection, and then I'd probably be a lazy asshole and never use any of it.

Interested in hearing recorded works employing the source though...
Yeah if nobody is gonna try downloading this as is (185GB zip) I am thinking of converting them to mp3 and see if that is of interest to anyone.

that way people can convert for whatever source type as need
obviously going to be big one hell of a batch convert job
you can use this https://www.freac.org/ drag & drop folder
2 channels of 16bit audio at 44.1KHz = 2 x 16 x 44,100 = 1,411,200 bits/sec, or 172kbyte/sec
Traditionally, wav->mp3 conversions were done at 128kbit, or 16kbyte/sec
So, 172 / 16 = 10.75:1 compression
you are looking at roughly 18.5gb BBC mp3 archive
sounds way more sane

I currently running this as a batch using a python script and ffmpeg with the lame encoder.. out of curiosity I tried dropping 16000 wav files on freac and it crashed.. not much of a surprise .. I can't think of any programs with a UI that you could just give the path to a folder and they would process the files without trying to display all the individual files first. Plus I wanted them to be saved in an identical hierarchy but with a different root and that seems to be an unusual feature request. Not sure how large the result will be but the first 100 files went from a total 800mb to 100mb

sort of had feeling that would crash fre:ac
tried a folder full of video files for fast test before threw the link
yet no where near that amount of workload
it probably locked up/capped ram & cache with queue
you have it covered anyway with script/ffmpeg
"normal humans" would be completely fuct even daring such a task
Bravo Good Job

ok here it is again this time the archive is 19GB .. I had to re-encode the mp3's at 96k but since they are not really complex sounds they still sounds pretty good to my ears

Shit! I actually used to own this record when I was about 13. Nice to see that cover again. Btw what is the copyright like on these albums?

That's a good question.. I was always under the impression that for the most part the whole point of sound effects records is that they are royalty free sounds. I'll have to look at some of the LP's I have and see what they actually say on the sleeves.

However this downloadable library says that they are not for commercial use but I seriously doubt the BBC is going to be chasing down a noise release on bandcamp that has been paid for a few times.

Also one might assume that some of the sound sin the online library are on the BBC records but I can't confirm that and the metadata doesn't seem to indicate one way or the other.

Well I pulled several sound effects records and each had a different take on the usage rights.. most seem to give free reign on public performance and use in broadcasting but some deny any type of re-recording and the BBC one above says amateur use only. For the most part I think they mainly would frown upon somebody repackaging these and reselling them as sound effects and aren't going to chase down every little snippet used in a noise recording or whatever.
