Re: Novice Contact Mic question

Glue everything up like this, it should last a good while and with quite a reasonable bit of abuse.

Re: Novice Contact Mic question

Yeah, where it is placed is more important than quality. I'd also add that the size of the element affects the sound, too. There's some protective measures you can take to stop it falling apart so quick. First thing I do is hot glue the top to stop the wires being torn off immediately. If I can get ...

Re: Keyboard synthesizers for noise

I personally recommend finding something with cross-synthesis. Someone here turned me on to it, and it quickly became a favourite. Good for when you want REALLY-NOISY.

For what it's worth, the DX200 (Which is basically a DX7) is my favourite poly synth and gets used a lot.

Re: How to mute channels in mixer?

The Mackie is a pretty nice mixer, for what it's worth. It sounds like your biggest issue is funds, so I would recommend making "Kill switches" and putting them right before sound enters the mixer. They're really cheap, just one button / switch and two 1/4" sockets for each channel. Borrow a solderi...

Re: Flangers, phasers, choruses for noise?

The Verbzilla is an important part of my own set up, it's really great solo in a feedback loop. I think it was Moisturizer (Probably not) that has a release that's almost entirely flangers. I've personally found flangers, phasers and choruses to be pretty dependant on what you put into them when it ...

Re: Need help with reverse engineering 2 sounds

I can't remember what I wrote, but we'll pretend it was brilliant. Anyways, the two tools you'll want is some way to view the waveform, and a spectrograph. Have a quick look on youtube about what one of them does first. I used an FM synth, mostly because that's my go-to for sound design. I modulated...

Re: Need help with reverse engineering 2 sounds

I was the opposite. I avoided it because it was too hard (Read: I was lazy). In the end I buckled down and started examining waveforms and a spectrograph and came out the other end able to put together what I imagine in my headbrain. It really makes life easier when I'm trying to come up with someth...

Re: Need help with reverse engineering 2 sounds

Before I get into the post, you should read up on "Critical listening." It'll go a long way and you don't have to wait on someone else to reply. Also, by loading sounds into software and zooming in, you can see the waveform and get a good idea of what the original source is. Also a spectrum analyser...

Re: Show us yr DIY!

I can empathise a bit with Ray. Early on, trying to fix more complicated things, it would get fixed, but I'd break something else in the process, fall victim to the phantom extra-screws, etc. People like The Post-Apocalyptic Inventor on YouTube makes me envious of the amount of cheap old tools peopl...
