existence of such a tool is a pustule on the face of this craft because "it's a back door for lazy assholes" Nope. The difference is not in terms of "good" vs "bad", but rather in how it feels to use a particular tool. You can, of course, use rubber stamps, coloring books and jigsaw puzzles creativ...

distortion is probably the most common, simple, and therefore most affordable type of pedal
at the same time, it's probably the one effect that will affect your overall sound the most
no reason to buy junk when you can get the real deal without breaking the bank
